Combined Engineering, Observations from the Front Lines

“Combined Engineering,” or the merging of the Developer and Test roles into a single discipline, is a hot topic in the software industry today. Many companies are either considering moving to a combined model or have made such a change already. Is this just the trend du jour or is it a seismic shift in the way we’ll approach software engineering moving forward? What impact do these changes have on product quality and the engineers working in these roles? In this talk we will explore some of the pros and cons of “Combined Engineering” and share some tips and lessons learned from one engineer’s experience living on the front lines of this transformation.

About the speaker:

Jamie Campbell is a Senior Manager at Tableau Software. Prior to joining Tableau, he worked at Microsoft where he was a member of several Office product teams including Outlook, OneNote, Trustworthy Computing and FrontPage. Jamie has 17 years of experience in the software testing industry over 12 of which have been spent leading technical teams. His engineering interests include shipping high quality user experiences, using telemetry to draw insights and optimizing engineering practices. In his not so copious free time Jamie enjoys listening to KEXP and watching the Mariners while away Felix Hernandez’s golden years.
